New York, NY - April 3, 2025: Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani speaks at the city mayoral candidates forum held by Reverend Al Sharpton at 2025 annual NAN Convention at Sheraton Times Square

Mamdani Makes Controversial Move As Conflict With Iran Intensifies

New York City’s democratic socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is facing a fresh wave of backlash after posting a photo showing an iftar dinner inside Gracie Mansion with Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent anti-Israel activist the Trump administration previously sought to deport while labeling him a Hamas supporter.

Mamdani shared the image Monday night on X, saying he and his wife hosted Khalil, along with Noor and their son, Deen, to “break our fast together.”

“For Mahmoud Khalil, this past year has been marked by profound hardship—and by profound courage,” Mamdani wrote.

“Last night, as we marked the one-year anniversary of his detention, Rama and I were honored to welcome Mahmoud, Noor, and their son Deen to Gracie Mansion to break our fast together,” he added. “Mahmoud is a New Yorker, and he belongs in New York City.”

The post, viewed millions of times, triggered immediate blowback from conservatives and Jewish advocacy voices, many of whom accused Mamdani of turning the mayor’s residence into a stage for radical politics during a tense moment for the city.

Outkick founder Clay Travis blasted the decision, writing, “Posting a celebratory photo of an anti-Israel college protester who should be deported next to your ‘non public figure’ wife, who cheered the rape and murder of Jews on 10/7, the day after two radical Muslims threw pipe bombs on your sidewalk is a hell of a choice, Mamdani.”

Travis was referencing separate reports that alleged Mamdani’s wife had “liked” social media posts celebrating the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Mamdani has pushed back on that controversy by insisting his wife is not a “public figure.”

Others focused on what they see as the symbolism of hosting Khalil at Gracie Mansion.

“Nothing says that the NY City Mayor condemns Islamic terrorism quite like having dinner in Gracie Mansion with those who actively promote it,” wrote Joel M. Petlin, superintendent of the Kiryas Joel School District.

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, a Republican, called the dinner a stunning display of priorities. “Just a casual dinner at Gracie with the lovely, private citizen, shy wifey whose fingers could not keep up with liking posts about the MASSACRE of Jews, and the RING LEADER & CHIEF ‘NEGOTIATOR’ of Columbia’s antisemitic encampments where Jewish students were harassed and intimidated, and where they literally glorified convicted terrorists,” Vernikov wrote.

Journalist Neria Kraus added, “This is what Zohran Mamdani stands for. Mahmoud Khalil justified October 7th. ‘We couldn’t avoid such a moment,’ he viciously explained in an interview. Well, he was invited to the people’s house of NYC, Gracie Mansion, to a celebratory dinner. This is everything you need to know.”

UPenn student Eyal Yakoby wrote, “Syrian national Mahmoud Khalil, refers to Hamas as as ‘we’. Tonight, he dined with Zohran Mamdani in the mayor’s mansion. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Islamists launched an IED at New Yorkers over the weekend—they feel empowered.”

Leo Terrell, civil rights attorney and chair of the Justice Department Taskforce on Antisemitism, posted, “After getting exposed for liking posts about Oct. 7, why waste any time before hosting a man who justifies terrorism too? These people are proud!”

The Republican Jewish Coalition also weighed in, writing, “In NYC, terrorist sympathizers have a seat at Zohran Mamdani’s table. Mahmoud Khalil should be deported, not fluffed by the Mayor of the City of New York. Disgraceful.”

Mamdani’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The controversy comes as Mamdani is already under scrutiny over his response to a weekend incident near Gracie Mansion involving two men accused of throwing improvised explosive devices. Authorities have been investigating the attack as an “act of ISIS-inspired terrorism.”
