Stray dog hailed as hero after saving 30 children from venomous snake

Kali, a stray dog from India, is being remembered as a hero after sacrificing herself to save 30 children from a venomous snake.

The incident took place on April 20, 2026, in Dhirakula village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. That morning, students had gathered near Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir Elementary School, chatting as usual.

At the time, the students were unaware that a poisonous snake was approaching them. Kali the dog sensed something was wrong.

Instead of retreating, however, the well-loved village canine sprang into action to help protect the children.

According to a report from News18, Kali charged forward and placed herself between the snake and the children. Villagers said she continued fighting despite being struck multiple times by the snake, believed to be a cobra.

The snake was eventually killed, and none of the students were harmed. That said, Kali suffered a bite to the mouth and later died as the venom spread.

News of her death quickly made it through the village, leaving residents both grateful and deeply shaken.

To honor her sacrifice, villagers held a funeral ceremony typically reserved for humans, according to Daily Hunt.

Kali’s body was carried on a flower-adorned trolley, wrapped in white cloth, and laid to rest with full rites.

NDTV reported that one of the villagers said, “Kali saved the lives of our children and will remain immortal in our hearts.”

Kali managed to prevent a serious tragedy, and with that, she’s remembered as a guardian to the children.
