Missing girl, 11, abducted six years ago found ALIVE living 2,600 miles away

A five-year-old girl who was abducted almost six years ago has been found safe and well around 2,600 miles away.

Karen Rojas, now 11, was kidnapped on June 2, 2020, from Duarte, near Los Angeles, California. And she has now been found living under an alias in Washington County, North Carolina, on Tuesday.

Police in the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) received a tip off from colleagues in Los Angeles who alerted them that the young girl could be in their state.

The breakthrough had come after a multi-agency investigation tracked the child to a school where she is understood to have been living under a false identity.

The girl was found living on the other side of the United States .

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said:

“These are very rare occurrences to have such a positive outcome on such an old case as this, but it reminds us that through hard work, and dedication, and cooperation. Stories with positive outcomes like these can happen.”

And the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the child’s mother had custody but stopped communicating with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) during an investigation and was believed to have taken the child.

No details have yet been given on whether authorities will be making arrests or charges in connection with the incident. It is also unclear exactly how long the child had been in North Carolina or who she was living with at the time she was located.

The LASD said it will continue to coordinate with DCFS and North Carolina authorities as the investigation remains ongoing.

Michele Hundley Smith left her three children, who were seven, 14 and 19 at the time and her disappearance from North Carolina, in the USA, was investigated by the police and the FBI. Now, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office has announced she is “alive and well”. Her shocked family has been left wondering what happened back in 2001.

Speaking to local news station WFMYNews2, her cousin Barbara Byrd said:

“I kind of want to go outside and scream ‘she’s alive, she’s alive’. For years, we didn’t know if we were grieving or waiting… My biggest question is to her ‘What happened all those years ago in December? What made you leave? What happened?”
